How Amy Schumer Became One of the Most Successful Female Comedians
Despite starting her stand-up career in 2004, Amy Schumer has just recently become popular and successful. Obviously, her fame didn’t come easily. So, how did Amy Schumer become one of the most successful female comedians of our time?
The Early Days
Amy Schumer grew up in Long Island, New York. She was a jokester in high school, and was even voted as Class Clown and Teacher’s Worst Nightmare, the year she graduated (1999). After high school, Schumer went to college at Towson University. There, she studied theater. After college, she moved back to New York City, and began studied at the William Esper Studio for two years. In the early 2000’s, Schumer began performing stand-up comedy. After performing stand-up comedy for only three years, she recorded an episode for Comedy Central, called Live at Gotham. After filming Live at Gotham, Schumer thought she had made her big break. But, that was not the case. Shortly after filming Live at Gotham, Schumer was featured on the NBC reality show, Last Comic Standing, where she placed fourth.
The Late 2000’s to early 2010’s
During the late 2000’s, Schumer was featured on many television shows. Firstly, in 2008, she co-starred in the reality Comedy Central show, Reality Bites Back. One year later, Schumer was seen in an advertising campaign for Butterfinger. She even became a reoccurring guest on the late night program, Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld. Then, in 2010 Schumer filmed and aired her first Comedy Central special, which had great reception. Throughout the early 2010’s, Schumer guest starred in a wide variety of shows, such as; 30 Rock, Delocated, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Girls. In 2011, she released her first stand-up comedy album, Cutting, which also had amazing reception.
2012 proved to be a groundbreaking year for Schumer. She filmed her second comedy special for Comedy Central, Mostly Sex Stuff, which demonstrated her outspokenness, and courage to say what everyone is thinking. Then, she starred in three films; Price Check, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, and Sleepwalk with Me. Then, in June 2012, Schumer began developing a sketch comedy series, which would premier on Comedy Central. This sketch comedy series became Inside Amy Schumer, which debuted on Comedy Central, on April 30, 2013. Then, in August 2012, Schumer was featured on the Comedy Central Roast of Roseanne Barr.
Since 2013, Schumer has acted in her sketch comedy series, Inside Amy Schumer. On Inside Amy Schumer, Schumer plays heightened versions of herself. Then, in 2014, Schumer went on a tour, Back Door Tour, to promote the second season of Inside Amy Schumer. During 2014, she also guest starred on the internet series, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. Up until then, Schumer was popular, but wasn’t as famous as she is now. So, what really boosted Schumer’s popularity and success?
The answer is her summer 2015 blockbuster, Trainwreck. Schumer wrote and starred in Trainwreck. This romantic comedy chronicles the life of Amy (played by Schumer), a promiscuous care-free magazine writer. But, when she meets the successful sports doctor, Aaron Conners (played by Saturday Night Live veteran, Bill Hader), Amy wonders if she should begin to get your life on track. This hilarious movie made people pay attention to Schumer and her talent. Since then, she has been featured on many talk shows, television shows, and on the cover of magazines.
